US Deputy Secretary of Agriculture, Congresswoman visit Lewes Elementary School

HFHK was thrilled to welcome U.S. Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Xochitl Torres Small, Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester, Delaware First Lady Tracey Quillen Carney, Senator Tom Carper's office, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Delaware Department of Agriculture (DDA), Cape Henlopen School District Child Nutrition/Food Services, Cape Henlopen School District Superintendent Robert Fulton, Monica Moriak from Christina School District and others at Lewes Elementary School's garden on Friday, May 3 to celebrate both HFHK and our partnership with Lewes Elementary School and National School Lunch Hero Day.

The visitors participated in a mini harvest lesson with students, and heard first-hand testimony from principals at Indian River School District's Early Learning Center, Phillip C. Showell Elementary School, Lord Baltimore Elementary School, Sussex Academy Elementary, SussexMontessori School, and Allen Frear Elementary School on the impact HFHK’s Education Cultivation has had on their school and community. The visit was planned, in-part, to highlight USDA’s Farm to School grant program, of which HFHK was a 2023 recipient. Funds from this grant allowed HFHK to expand to three additional partner schools and host our first Garden Coordinator professional development workshop in November 2023.
