HFHK receives major funding from Delaware Dept. of Agriculture and Highmark

Two new grants totaling $90,000 were awarded to HFHK this summer. This funding gives us the opportunity to launch two new school garden programs along with a number of necessary garden rebuilds.

In July, Healthy Foods for Healthy Kids received a $60,000 grant from The First State Food System Program, a new grant program organized by the Council on Farm and Food Policy, an advisory committee to the Delaware Department of Agriculture. This program, funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), is intended to highlight the interconnection of systems and processes that influence nutrition, food security, health, community development, and agricultural prosperity.

The $60,000 awarded to HFHK will fund the build of two new gardens and program implementation at two new schools within Sussex County over the course of two years.

Highmark BCBS awarded HFHK a two-year $30,000 grant in August through their BluePrints for the Community program. This funding will support the garden rebuilds at Brookside, North Star, Joseph E. Johnson, Shortlidge and West Park Place Elementary Schools.

Many thanks to the Council on Farm and Food Policy and Highmark BCBS for supporting the expansion and continuation of our "Education Cultivation" program.
